From drag racing and dune pulls to hill shoots and short-course launches, one of the biggest hidden performance killers is intercooler heat soak while you’re idling, staging, or cruising. From the factory, the ECU only turns the intercooler fan on under heavy load, then lets it run for a short period after you lift. That means as you’re sitting in line or rolling around off-boost, your intercooler is just getting hotter and hotter.

This kit gives you manual control of the intercooler fan at the flip of a switch, so you can pre-cool the intercooler before you hammer the throttle. Dyno testing has shown a consistent 2–3 HP gain for roughly 10 seconds after staging vs. letting the fan operate in stock mode, simply by keeping charge temps lower going into the pull.

How It Works

From the factory, the X3’s intercooler fan only kicks on at higher load and then only runs briefly after you lift. So if you’re:

  • Warming up the car before a pass

  • Sitting in line for your shot at the hill

  • Cruising around looking for a race

…the fan usually isn’t running long enough to keep the intercooler cool. When you finally go wide open, the fan turns on, but the intercooler is already heat soaked and takes several seconds to come back down in temperature. By that time, the pass is mostly over.
